Distribution of the Antibiotic-producing Streptomyces

Abstract
Distribution of the antibiotic-producing Streptomyces (The isolation of the streptomyces showed antibiotic activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa)
The antibiotic-producing Streptomyces strains were isolated from the soils gathered from various localities in Kwang Ju, and tested the activity against some of Grampositive and negative microorganisms especially P. aeruginosa. The results are summarized as follows.
1. A total of 488, Streptomyces strains were isolated from 112 soil-samples. Of all the strains tested, 212 (43.40) strains of the isolates showed antibiotic activity against either Gram-positive or negative test-organisms. In some strains, both of them, and also 136 strains (27.9%) were strongly active against one or all of those test organisms.
2. Thirty-one strains of Streptomyces among the active isolates produced the antibiotic substance against P. aeruginosa, and 8 strains among the 31 showed strongly antibiotic activity against all of the test organisms e.g. Staph. aureus, B.. subtilis, E. coli, Sal. Typhi and Shig. flexneri.
3. Antibiotic-producing Streptomyces strains against P. aeruginosa were isolated from the soil-samples taken from vegetable field, paddy field, sandy ground and roadway, but none of active isolates, from around dwelling, grass field and sewage disposal area.
